1st Annual Best of the West Jazz Competition
DESTIN, FLORIDA, January 8, 2020— HarborWalk Village is set to host the 1st Annual Best of the West High School Jazz Competition on Saturday, January 18th from 11:00am- 5:00pm. Schools from Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton and Bay counties will be competing on the main stage for a grand prize of $1,500. Over $4,000 in prize monies will be awarded to school music programs during the event.
“We are so excited to showcase the many talented high school musicians and programs we have in the area,” said Lindsay Lacasse, Event Manager for HarborWalk Village.
Each program is allotted 20 minutes to perform up to three pieces for judging. Judges include Rebecca Barry, founder of Fairhope Music, Allen Beeson, renowned trumpet player for Ray Charles, The Temptations, and even the Beach Boys, and Steve Gilmore, a jazz double-bassist who has worked with Zoot Sims, Richie Cole and the National Jazz Ensemble. Intermission will feature a performance by local jazz band, Port O’ Call.
Winning schools have the opportunity to perform at the Pensacola Jazz Festival and at the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village as a part of their 25th Anniversary Celebration.

Sponsors for this event include the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation, Sinfonia Gulf Coast, Playground Music Center, Northwest Florida Daily News, Jazz Pensacola, Northwest Florida State College and Schmidt’s Music.
The weekend ends with Brunch, Rhythm & Brews on Sunday, January 19th. HarborWalk Village restaurants will be serving brunch starting at 11:00am. The Northwest Florida State College Jazz Band will perform on the main stage at 2:00pm.
These events are free to attend and open to the public.
